Loft living in a heritage shophouse

An unusually awesome & modern duplex apartment in a shophouse for 1-4 persons. It's a rare unit, and the price actually reflects the high cost of electricity in Malaysia. IMPORTANT: 1. There are 2+1 flights of stairs to the Loft unit and loft inside. 2. This is a traditional house. Don't expect a hotel. You have to turn off a/c when out, fiddle with padlocks, and practise recycling of cans, glass, plastic and paper, take out wet rubbish nightly.

The listed price is the starting rate is for 1-2 persons (using the queen bed only, not including sofa bed) booking this loft apartment. The apartment can take up to four persons, & the use of the sofa bed/3rd person onwards up to 4 will be charged RM50 per sofa bed/pax per night.

Get the unique experience of living in George Town! The Shophouse is a re-configured modern space in an original three-storey terrace house in the World Heritage City, furnished mostly with vintage furniture.

The third floor is an open plan space with an amazing loft and high ceiling. "Wow" is the first thing people say when they walk in. Think of days when the family would bunk into one room and everyone "camps" out. There is one queen sized bed on the loft, with one 1hp aircon there; and three convertible sofa beds (firm) in the large living room space with two 1hp aircons. There's a simple kitchenette (electric kettle/fridge/water provided) and a roomy bathrooom.

*Not too suitable for the elderly (because of the stairs). Active young children below 10 need close supervision (because of the grill-less windows).
* Minimum two nights stay required. The listed price is for 1-2 pax, with additional costs for the third and fourth persons or if sofa bed is used besides the queen bed. The total number of people to stay on this floor is four (because five could mean a long wait for the bathroom).
* Not suitable for sensitive sleepers (more below). Being in George Town, do expect some street noise. At night - the noise comes mainly from an opposite hawker wokking away. There are motorbikes zipping by. Heavy traffic noise is minimal, and fortunately, a popular midnight eatery has moved away so that has cut down the supper crowd considerably!
*BRING/ASK FOR EARPLUGS if you're a sensitive sleeper!
** I'm going to be putting up some black out curtains to see if they can help cut down on the street noise
***On the other hand, these are the "aural rhythms" of the living city of George Town :)

** Please notify me before booking if you're planning to check in after 7pm because I'm not always able to accommodate this.
** This is the top floor (including loft) of the three-storey Shophouse. The other 2 floors below could be occupied at your time of stay. All share a common main entrance and staircase but have separate doors to their apartment units.

Off the main artery of Penang Road, Dato Koyah itself is largely residential and very conveniently situated. The place is great for those who want to explore Penang's famed hawker food and heritage sites on foot. Easy bus access to other parts of the island.
Best of the best in George Town found within 5 mins walk: wantan mee, koay teow th'ng, bak moay, char hor fun, 24 hrs nasi kandar, kaya toast & coffee, chee cheong chok ( a pork-based broth), cendol.

I or my mother (my co-agoda conspirator) will be present to check guests in, and give them a brief overview of how they should treat the space: locks, switches, aircon guidelines, garbage disposal, second exits etc.
Upon booking, guests also get a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) list map of food recommendations, and they also get a physical artist-drawn food map of the immediate area near the Shophouse. I can customise any other recommendations and travel tips if they ask.

The world heritage core zone is easily accessible by foot, and the public bus service is just across the main road. Great food within minutes of walking!

*I've taken off the instant booking bc of the coronavirus & will appreciate if guests share their past 14-day travel history before booking* This is a self-serviced apartment so there's no daily cleaning service except for long-stay guests (more than 4 nights). The host will occasionally be in residence (floor below) but otherwise, the main interaction is when guests check in!

The best part of this neighbourhood is that it has a lot of local residents. The street is quieter in the day than it is at night, so guests who are sensitive sleepers should take note of this!
Night noise comes from the enthusiastic wok-whacking hawker in the eatery right opposite the Shophouse. And groups of chatty friends who walk down the road for supper. **Updated Jan 30 2018: there's now a disco/party space operating TWO streets away but the sound travels to the Loft. I've made a complaint to the authorities but I think it'll take some time for them to take action.

it's very convenient to use Grab, and walk out for buses and taxis just out on the main road, Penang Road.

Minimum two nights stay required. Do book at least two days in advance, b/c the Loft unit is quite large and time will be needed to prepare all the bedding! Do check with me first if you're coming in before noon or after 7pm.
