About This Hotel

Cottage inside Agumbe Rainforest sunset Full board

The cottage is nestled deep inside the Agumbe Rainforest.
As you get off the tar road, you will leave behind the noise and crowd as you drive for 2km into the unpaved forest road and walk down a rugged natural gravel path to reach the cottages in the valley surrounded by a hillock. Welcomed by a breathtaking view and the call of cicadas, you will be overwhelmed by the sounds of gurgling streams, rustling leaves, chirping birds, and gushing winds.

Our pine wood cottages are designed to offer you a cosy and comfortable stay. You get a double bed, a futon with blankets, clean western toilets with toilet paper, towels, and hot water showers. You also get an electric kettle with coffee/tea supplies to ensure you enjoy your private space.

Relax at your sit-out facing the forest, playing hide and seek with birds, the endemic gliding lizards or Malabar giant squirrels in the canopies, or watch starry nights amidst frog calls and flitting fireflies; or just be lost in a dream.

Free Wi-fi and phone connectivity allow you to remain connected with your dear ones.

At the common dining hall, you are treated to an array of 'malnad' (local cuisine) vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes over interesting conversations with researchers, students and other guests. This humbling setting makes for great bonding with the wilderness and people.

You can enjoy our wildlife documentaries or spend time browsing through the library stocked with books on nature, field guides, board games, and wildlife coffee table books.

Experience the rainforest on foot with our naturalists, who are adept at spotting animals and explaining the workings of life in a rainforest. Swim in a private, natural forest stream, explore the rainforest at night, go birding, or relax by the pond. Get a glimpse into our ongoing wildlife research projects.

Agumbe receives the heaviest rainfall in South India. It is splendorous during the monsoon but sometimes at the cost of losing phone and internet connectivity.

If communion with nature is what you seek, then you have arrived. We would like to meet you too.

Our team will be available.

Read on, if driving down:

Keep your eyes perked up as you travel 1km from Guddekere bus stop towards Thirthahalli. On your left is a path lined by tall casuarina trees (that appear like pine trees) next to a sleepy bus stand called Galimara bus stand. Take this left and proceed till the end where the road diverges. You must now take the road most taken! i.e. towards the right. The reddish mud path almost glows and leads you deeper welcomed by chirping birds and sudden flights of green bee-eaters.
Continue until you reach a T-end and this is called Hasirumane, which is also the last sight of human habitation. Follow the sign boards. Take a right and as you pass, a rustic old temple with brass bells stares at you. Continue straight till you spot an unwelcoming sight of a cement water tank on your right and here is the next right turn.
Everything ahead from here gives the true feeling of a jungle..adventure begins! Brace yourselves for surprises, from here wildlife starts to peep and creep.
Drive slow and look out for gaurs, scorpions, snakes, sambar deer, leopards and more. Continue driving till a fence appears holding back acacia plantation on the right and a huge man-made water hole on the left.
At the end of this path the road diverges again, and this time you must take the road less taken! i.e towards the right.
You are now officially in the heart of the forests and the whispering canopies converge high up wrapping you warm as you tread precariously on an escarpment for the next half kilometre. And then you stop!

Park your vehicles here and walk down a flight of stairs. You've arrived at Kalinga Mane.
