Regarding the copying of international travelers' passports:

According to law set forth by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, hotel staff must make copies of the passports or residence cards of international guests who do not have Japanese citizenship.
Even if the representative of a group of guests is Japanese, if other guests in the group are non-Japanese citizens their passport(s)/residence card(s) must be photocopied.
Due to government instruction, non-Japanese guests with no passport and no residence card cannot stay at the hotel.
Also, even in the case of cancellation due to such reasons, the usual cancellation fees will still apply, and will be 100% in the case of same-day cancellation.
Please make sure you have your passport before going to the hotel.
